Entry into Germany generally requires a visa, which is issued by a German diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate) in the applicant’s country of origin. The German diplomatic missions where visa applications must be submitted fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Foreign Office.

Whether the German diplomatic mission abroad decides on its own or must involve the immigration authority responsible for the future place of residence depends on the duration and purpose of the intended stay.

As a general rule, the Immigration Office must be involved

• if the stay is expected to last longer than three months.
• if you intend to work as a self-employed person in Germany.
• for nationals of certain countries.

Depending on nationality, purpose, and duration of stay, there are entry facilitation measures.
