Notifying the School or Daycare Center of a Head Lice Infestation
Service description
If you discover that your child has head lice, you must immediately notify the public facility that your child attends regularly (such as daycare centers, schools, or similar facilities).
The management of the communal facility must immediately notify the public health department and provide information regarding the illness and the individuals involved.
Head lice infestation is the most common parasitic disease in Europe. Anyone can get head lice. This is not due to poor hygiene. Head lice spread quickly, especially in places where many children gather.
Children with head lice may not enter the community facility’s premises, use its facilities, or participate in its events until there is no longer a risk that they will spread the infestation.
A doctor’s note is required only if a person has had repeated lice infestations within a four-week period. This is in accordance with the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute.
Procedure
- As a parent, please notify the administration of the daycare center immediately, either in writing or verbally, if your child has head lice. If possible, please also notify the parents of the children with whom your child has frequent contact.
- Treat your child with the medications prescribed by the doctor at the specified intervals.
- If there are no more lice or viable nits on your child's head, he or she may return to daycare as usual.

- Statement from the parents confirming that the treatment was performed properly.
- In the case of a single infestation, confirmation that the treatment was carried out properly is sufficient for re-admission.
