Apply for Key Number 96 or Key Number 196
Service description
Under certain conditions, you may be able to expand your Class B driver’s license. With the code B96, you may drive Class B motor vehicles with a trailer having a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 750 kg, provided that the gross vehicle weight rating exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg. The code B196 allows you to operate motorcycles (including those with sidecars) with a maximum engine displacement of 125 cm³, an engine power of no more than 11 kW, and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg. To obtain this, you must complete the corresponding driver training in accordance with Annex 7a (category code B96) or 7b (category code B196) of the Driver’s License Regulation (FeV).
Special information for the Fulda districtIf your driver's license has been lost, stolen, or rendered unusable because it has become illegible, or if your appearance and/or gender has changed, or for any other reason, you will need a new driver's license.
You are not required to apply for a new driver’s license if your name changes due to marriage or other circumstances, provided that the name on your driver’s license can be verified using your identification documents. It is up to you whether you would like to have a new driver’s license issued.
Procedure
They must complete the applicable driver training in accordance with Appendix 7a (code 96) or Appendix 7b of the FeV (code 96). When applying for registration, proof of driver training in accordance with the template in Appendix 7a or 7b must be provided. A new driving test is not required.
Prerequisites
For the extension by the key number 96:
- You must be at least 18 years old, or 17 years old if you are driving with an accompanying driver
- You must have completed at least seven hours of driver training and be able to provide proof of this (at least 2.5 hours of theoretical training, at least 3.5 hours of practical training)
- You must hold a Class B driver's license or meet the requirements for obtaining one
For the extension with the key number 196:- You must be at least 25 years old
- You must have held a Class B license for at least five years
- You must complete nine 90-minute class sessions (four theory sessions and five practical sessions) and be able to provide proof of completion
- The period between the completion of driver training and the entry of code 196 may not exceed one year
What documents are required?
- Identification card/passport, with a certificate of residence if applicable
- A current biometric-compliant photograph in accordance with the Passport Regulation (PassV) (size 45x35 mm, portrait orientation, full-face view); information and examples can be found in the Federal Printing Office’s sample photo chart
- Certificate of Participation in Driver Training pursuant to Annex 7a (code 96) or Annex 7b of the FeV (code 196)
- valid driver's license
- If applicable, a copy of the index card from the most recent issuing authority (if different from the current one)
What fees apply?
The Driver's License Authority charges fees in accordance with the Schedule of Fees for Road Traffic Measures.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The period between the completion of driver training and the entry of key number 196 must not exceed one year.
Processing time
The processing time depends on the workload of the respective driver's license agency.

If you have a criminal record and/or a traffic violation on your record—for example, for driving without a license—you will also be required to submit a current certificate of good conduct (no older than 3 months). In addition, an assessment will be conducted to determine whether there are any grounds for concern regarding your fitness to drive. In such cases, you may be required to submit a medical-psychological evaluation.
If you suffer from a medical condition that impairs your ability to drive, this may also raise concerns regarding your fitness to drive. These concerns may need to be addressed by submitting the required medical evaluations.
