Music School

Music schools are educational institutions whose primary tasks include providing a basic musical education, fostering the next generation of amateur and hobby musicians, identifying and nurturing talented students, and, where appropriate, preparing students for professional music studies.

Fees are charged for instruction at music schools and for the loan of musical instruments; these fees are set forth in the music school fee regulations.

Collaboration Between General Education Schools and Music Schools

In Hesse, collaboration between music schools and general education schools is given special support: Since the 2000–2001 school year, the State of Hesse has been funding cooperative projects between general education schools and music schools at over 30 locations throughout Hesse, particularly in grades 5 and 6. The projects are primarily intended to give children—especially those who, due to their home circumstances, would otherwise have little chance of attending a music school—the opportunity to participate in music.

Since the 2008–09 school year, 70 elementary schools have also been participating in the pilot project “An Instrument for Every Child” (JeKi Hessen). JeKi Hessen supports these schools by funding the purchase of instruments and instrumental lessons for children interested in music, taught by music school instructors.

For “Music-Focused Elementary Schools,” “Schools with a Focus on Music” (lower secondary level), “KulturSchulen Hessen” (secondary schools), and “Schools with Special Musical Support” (elementary and secondary schools), collaboration with music schools is an essential element in promoting musical practice in general education schools.
