Support During Pregnancy and Motherhood
Service description
As a recipient of social assistance or basic income support, you will receive support from the social services office during pregnancy and maternity—provided you do not have health insurance. You will receive the standard health insurance benefits:
- Medical treatment and care,
- Support from midwives,
- Medications, bandages, and remedies.
If necessary, you will receive care in inpatient facilities. If you need care at home and your family is unable to provide it, a portion of the costs for home care will also be covered. However, this depends on your care level.
Competent Authority
The Social Services Office of the respective local social assistance agency (county, city not part of a county) where the person resides is responsible.
Prerequisites
Health assistance is provided to individuals who do not have statutory health insurance or who have insufficient private health insurance, for whom coverage through a health insurance plan (Section 264(4) of Book V of the Social Code) is not an option, and who cannot reasonably be expected to cover the costs of the necessary assistance from their income and assets.
What documents are required?
- Application for Health Assistance
- Identification card or passport (or other documents that can unequivocally identify the person)
Information on the documents required in each individual case (such as proof of pregnancy or a prenatal care record, proof of income and assets, proof of current expenses, a current notice regarding subsistence benefits, prescriptions and/or, if applicable, payment receipts, required counseling confirmations, cost estimates, denial notices, etc.) will be provided by the responsible social assistance agency.
What fees apply?
There are no costs involved—except for the usual deductibles.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
There are no deadlines to meet. However, the responsible social assistance agency can only provide assistance starting from the date it becomes aware of the need. That is why it is important to submit an application as soon as possible.
Processing time
A decision on the application will be made as soon as possible, especially if there is a clear sense of urgency.
