Safety on the Way to School
Service description
Children are among the most vulnerable road users and therefore deserve our special consideration. Elementary school students—especially those just starting school—are particularly at risk in traffic. Traffic accidents often occur because children are not yet able to cope with the demands of today’s traffic conditions. While a safe route to school is an integral part of the school curriculum, it should be practiced with children at an early age. Caregivers should always lead by example and follow traffic rules—even as pedestrians—because children learn more from their exemplary behavior than from constant reminders and admonitions.
Schools are developing routes for students to get to school, and bus monitors, student crossing guards, and parent crossing guards may be assigned.
What else should I know?
Road safety education in schools is conducted in cooperation with the Hessian State Traffic Safety Association and the Hessian Accident Insurance Fund (UKH). As the statutory accident insurance provider, the UKH is responsible for accidents that occur on the way to and from school.
