Automotive: Disposing of an End-of-Life Vehicle (Certificate of Recycling)
Service description
Since January 1, 2007, as the last owner of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (i.e., vehicles used for transporting goods weighing up to 3.5 metric tons), you have the option to return your end-of-life vehicles that you wish to dispose of to the manufacturer or importer free of charge.
These entities are required to accept the end-of-life vehicles and must establish a nationwide take-back system either directly or through authorized third parties.If a vehicle is permanently decommissioned and disposed of, a certified end-of-life vehicle recycling facility must issue a certificate of recycling to the motor vehicle registration authority.
Procedure
If you want to have your end-of-life vehicle disposed of, you must take it to an authorized collection or return facility or an authorized dismantling facility.
- There, you will receive a certificate of disposal, which you must present when deregistering the vehicle at the vehicle registration office.
- You can find authorized facilities in your area by contacting the Regional Council (as the waste management authority), the automotive trade associations, or by searching online on the websites of the Joint Agency for End-of-Life Vehicles (GESA) and the vehicle manufacturers.

Prerequisites
- Before being recycled, the end-of-life vehicle must contain all essential parts, components, and electronic control units
- The vehicle must have been registered in the European Union at least one month prior to its permanent decommissioning.
