Protection of minors

The following regulations apply to the protection of minors:

Alcoholic beverages:

• Under 16:
  • The sale (including retail and on-premises service) and consumption of alcoholic beverages are generally prohibited. An exception applies to beer, beer-based mixed drinks, sparkling wine, wine, and wine-based mixed drinks if a legal guardian is present and permits it.
• Ages 16 and up:
  • The sale and consumption of beer, beer-based mixed drinks, sparkling wine, wine, and wine-based mixed drinks are permitted.
  • The sale and consumption of spirits and mixed beverages containing spirits are prohibited.
• Ages 18 and up:
  • The sale and consumption of spirits and mixed drinks containing spirits, as well as all other alcoholic beverages, are permitted.

Smoking:

• under 18 years of age
  • Tobacco products may only be sold to adults. Children and adolescents are not permitted to smoke in public.
  • The sale, distribution, and transfer of tobacco products to children and adolescents is generally prohibited. Teenagers under the age of 18 must not be permitted to use tobacco products.

Media

• under 18 years of age
  • At public film screenings, children and adolescents may only watch films that are rated appropriate for their age (age rating).
  • Media that are unrated or labeled "Not approved for minors" may not
    • shall not be offered, provided, or otherwise made available to a child or adolescent,
    • not in retail settings outside of business premises, at kiosks, or at other points of sale that customers do not typically enter,
    • or are offered or made available through mail-order sales.
• under 12 years old
  • Notwithstanding the above, children and adolescents aged 6 and older may be permitted to attend screenings of films rated for children and adolescents aged 12 and older if they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Evening Events / Disco

• Principle
  • There are no legal regulations regarding how late children and teenagers are generally allowed to stay out in the evening or whether they are allowed to sleep over at friends’ houses. These decisions are made by the parents.
  • Children and teenagers are generally prohibited from entering nightclubs and arcades.
• Under 16:
  • Visits to restaurants, dance events, and nightclubs are permitted only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (parent, guardian) or a person designated by the parents to provide supervision and care (a person over the age of 18 whom the parents have entrusted with the responsibility of accompanying and supervising the child).
• Ages 16 and up:
  • Until midnight, minors are permitted to remain in restaurants, at dance events, and in nightclubs without being accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • After midnight, visitors are permitted only if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
