Change Vehicle Information or Owner Information
Service description
If there are any changes to your vehicle's registration information or vehicle specifications, you must notify your local vehicle registration authority. This applies to:
- Passenger car
- Truck
- Motorcycle
- Passenger buses
- Trailer
Vehicle registration information changes if you change your name—for example, if you get married. You must also notify the registration authority of your new address if you move.
Vehicle specifications or technical data may change, for example, in the following cases:
- Change in Vehicle Class
- Changes to engine displacement, rated power, fuel type, or energy source
- Increase in the maximum speed determined by the vehicle's design
- Reduction of the maximum speed determined by the vehicle's design, if this is relevant to the driver's license or vehicle registration
- Changes to the permissible axle loads, gross vehicle weight, support load, or trailer load
- Increase in vehicle dimensions, except for passenger cars and motorcycles
- Changes to the Number of Seats or Standing Spaces on Buses
- Changes in emissions or noise levels, to the extent that they affect motor vehicle tax or traffic restrictions
Depending on the change, the licensing authority will provide you with
- new registration documents and
- When you change your license plate, you'll need new inspection stickers for your vehicle.
You can visit your registration office in person or appoint a representative.
Competent Authority
The local registration authority in the county or independent city (registration office). For natural persons, jurisdiction is determined by the place of residence of the vehicle owner (in the case of multiple residences, by the location of the primary residence); for legal entities, business operators, and self-employed individuals with a permanent place of business, jurisdiction is determined by the registered office or the location of the relevant branch.
Prerequisites
- Your owner information or vehicle information has changed.
- You do not have any outstanding vehicle tax debts of 5.00 EUR or more. This includes late payment penalties, interest, and late fees.
What documents are required?
- If available: completed application forms
- a valid identification document, such as an ID card or passport belonging to the vehicle owner; if a passport is presented, a current certificate of residence is also required;
- A valid electronic insurance confirmation (eVB), if applicable
- Certificate of Registration, Part I (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
- A valid general inspection and, if applicable, a safety inspection
- if applicable, the vehicle owner’s bank account information or SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax
For trailers, in addition:
- If available: Trailer Directory
Depending on the type of change made to the vehicle or owner information, you may need to provide additional documents:
- Moving to a different registration district – the vehicle owner remains the same:
- For a new license plate:
- Certificate of Registration, Part II (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
- Old license plates used to invalidate the stamp stickers
- If already available: new (preferred) license plate number reserved in advance
- If already available: new license plates
- If you keep your current license plate:
- Certificate of Registration, Part II (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
- Notice that the current license plate number will remain in use
- For a new license plate:
- Moving to a different registration district – Change in vehicle owner:

If any of the following vehicle specifications are changed: vehicle class as defined in Annex XXIX of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations; changes to the engine displacement, rated power, fuel type, or energy source:
- Certificate of Registration, Part II (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
If represented by a third party:
- A written power of attorney and the original identification document of the owner
- If applicable: ID card or passport of the authorized person
Depending on the specific case, the vehicle registration authority may require you to provide additional or different documentation.
