Apply for a classic car license plate (H plate) for a vehicle registered 30 or more years ago

When applying in person:

When you register your classic car with your local registration office, you will be assigned a license plate combination on the spot. The registration office may require you to present the vehicle. With this assignment:

• Have the license plates made;
• Have the registration authority affix the stickers to the license plates;
• Securely attach the license plates to the designated locations on the vehicle.

When applying online:

You can only apply for a classic car license plate online if the vehicle has previously had a classic car license plate. If you apply for a classic car license plate through the i-Kfz portal:

• The assignment of a classic car license plate is entered directly into the Central Vehicle Registry
• You will receive the classic car license plate notification via email or as a download
• Have the license plates embossed
• attach the registration authority's stickers to the license plates
• Secure these properly in the designated location on the vehicle

The following applies to both types of applications:

When re-registering a vehicle, you can request to have your previous license plates reassigned. This also applies if you have reserved the license plate for the re-registration of your vehicle.

• First registration at least 30 years ago
• The vehicle is in good condition and largely original.
• a certified appraisal that verifies the vehicle's status as a classic car

Additional requirements as part of the admission process are:

• No outstanding fees or expenses from previous registrations exceeding 30 EUR
• No outstanding vehicle tax debts of 5 EUR or more, including all late payment penalties, interest, and late fees

• In Hesse: no outstanding fees or expenses from previous registrations exceeding 10 EUR (including any resulting late fees)

• Vehicle Registration Certificate and Vehicle Title (ZB II and ZB I)
• Expert report pursuant to § 23 of the StVZO (prepared by a technical expert)
• License plates (for registered vehicles)
• Valid eVB number from the insurance company; applies only to deregistered vehicles or vehicles with seasonal license plates
• valid ID card (or valid passport with proof of residence)
• Foreign residents must present a passport with a valid residence permit and proof of registration (for EU citizens, the "EU ID card")
• SEPA direct debit authorization for vehicle tax from the account holder and a copy of their ID card, if the vehicle has not yet been registered. (Download section on this page)

Vehicles may not be driven or parked on public property without license plates. License plates must not be reflective, obscured, or dirty, and must be affixed to the vehicle in accordance with legal requirements.
