School Health Examinations
The Regulation on the Organization of School Attendance (VOGSV) specifies the circumstances under which a medical certificate from a public health officer or school physician is required in cases of prolonged absences or health-related limitations.
Exemption from School Physical Education
If children or adolescents are unable to participate in physical education for more than three months due to health reasons, they may need a medical certificate from a public health officer (VOGSV § 3, para. 3). This does not apply if there are obvious injuries that are recognizable to the physical education teacher.
As soon as the school informs you that you need a medical certificate from a public health officer to continue to be fully or partially exempt from physical education, please contact the Pediatric and Adolescent Health Service at schularzt@landkreis-fulda.de.
If an in-person interview is required, we will contact you. A parent or legal guardian must be present for applicants under the age of 18.
Required Documents
- Copies of the excuses, certificates, and medical certificates issued to date
- A detailed medical certificate from the treating specialist, including the diagnosis, course of the illness, treatment to date, planned treatment, prognosis regarding the expected success of treatment, which sports are permissible, and which should be avoided. The specialist’s medical report must be submitted and must not be older than 6 months.

School Note for Illness
If a student is absent from class for an extended period of time, the school may require a medical certificate from a public health officer (VOGSV § 2, para. 2).
The assignment is made by the relevant school following a decision by the class conference, after a requirement to provide a doctor's note for absences has already been established.

Suspension of Compulsory Education
For children and adolescents who cannot be supported even in a special education school or through special education classes, compulsory schooling may be suspended permanently or temporarily (Hessian School Act (HSchG), § 65). A medical evaluation by a school physician is required for this.
The contract is awarded by the Fulda State School Authority.
