Waste Collection Systems

A contracted waste management company regularly collects the residual waste bins from all properties. There are 120-liter, 240-liter, 360-liter, 660-liter, and 1,100-liter waste bins. The waste bins are electronically tagged. During each collection, the system electronically verifies whether the bin placed out for emptying is registered with the city or municipality and is authorized to be emptied. This prevents improper disposal.

To avoid any issues with trash collection, you should regularly check the barcode labels on the sides of your trash bins to ensure they contain the correct information regarding the location, type, and size of the bin, as well as the collection schedule.

In the event of discrepancies, changes to the size of trash bins, or changes to the collection schedule, the relevant municipality should be notified immediately so that corrections can be made promptly.

The size of the trash bins depends on the number of people in your household. Each person must have 7.5 liters of bin capacity per week. You can choose to have your trash bin picked up either every 14 days or every 4 weeks. In addition, the organic waste bin is always collected every 14 days. For temporary increases in waste volume, you can also use garbage bags, which you can obtain from your city or municipal administration for a fee.

The maximum allowable total weight for a full 120-liter bin is 60 kg, and for a 240-liter bin, it is 110 kg.

You can drop off non-recyclable residual waste at the Kalbach Waste Management and Energy Center for disposal, or have it picked up by a waste disposal company.

If you regularly generate large quantities of waste, you must register the waste for disposal through a formal procedure. The staff at the Waste Management Department or the Kalbach Waste Management and Energy Center will be happy to assist you with this.

A recycling center for dropping off various recyclable materials has also been set up in the entrance area of the Waste Management and Energy Center.

The yellow bag or yellow bin is picked up regularly every 4 weeks.

In the Fulda district, you can choose whether to use either yellow bags or the yellow bin for collecting your packaging waste. If the yellow bin is not large enough, you may use yellow bags as a supplement and place them out for pickup. Please do not use the yellow bags as free plastic bags for household waste collection only to later place them in the yellow bin. Placing a yellow bag inside the yellow bin does not comply with the system operator’s guidelines.

The organizations responsible for packaging waste collection—the Dual Systems—have contracted Knettenbrech + Gurdulic Service GmbH & Co KG to handle the collection of yellow bags and yellow bins in the Fulda district. In all member municipalities of the Fulda District Waste Collection Association, organic waste is collected separately. In addition to the general waste bin, each property receives an organic waste bin. Residents who compost all their organic waste themselves or use it for agricultural purposes may opt out of receiving the organic waste bin.

All compostable household and yard waste belongs in the organic waste bin. The organic waste bin is picked up every 14 days, alternating with the general waste bin.

Please do not place compostable kitchen waste in plastic bags before putting it in the organic waste bin. Plastic bags cause major problems during the further processing of organic waste. Do not use compostable plastic bags either. These also cause problems in the organic waste stream because they have not yet broken down by the time the waste arrives at the recycling facility and must be sorted out as well, since the facility cannot distinguish between a compostable bag and a regular plastic bag. Instead, wrap wet waste in newspaper.

Note: There is no separate fee for the organic waste bin. It is funded by the revenue from household waste collection fees.

Waste paper is collected in all cities and municipalities using the paper bin. This is a 240-liter container with a blue sticker and a blue lid. Every property connected to the public waste collection service receives a paper bin.

The paper recycling bin is picked up every 4 weeks.

The maximum allowable total weight for a filled 240-liter container is 110 kg.

You can find the collection dates in your waste collection calendar. In addition, residents can drop off waste paper free of charge at the respective recycling centers (businesses are required to pay a fee).

Paper items coated with plastic or metal—such as milk and juice cartons, coffee packaging, aluminum foil, etc.—belong in the yellow bag or yellow bin.

Note: No separate fee is charged for the paper recycling bin. It is funded by the fees collected for household waste collection and the proceeds from the sale of the collected waste paper.

All cities and municipalities offer green waste collection services (door-to-door shredding, temporary collection sites, etc.). You can also drop off green waste at all recycling centers and composting facilities.

Note: No separate fees are charged for green waste collection. These services are funded by the revenue from household waste collection fees.

Return glass bottles subject to a deposit to the retailer. For other types of used glass (bottles, food jars, and drinking glasses), there are glass recycling bins in all cities and towns. Please sort your used glass by color: brown, white, and green. Blue glass belongs in the green bin.

Because some types of waste containing hazardous substances can pose risks to health and the environment, they must be collected and disposed of separately.

There are currently two options for this in the Fulda district.

Important Information on
Drop-Off: Whenever possible, please drop off hazardous waste in its original containers and keep different materials (especially liquids) separate from one another! Individual containers must not exceed 10 liters in volume. Only sealed containers will be accepted. The maximum amount per person is 100 kg.

Warning: Never simply leave hazardous waste lying around. Also, be mindful of children playing. Waste containing hazardous substances can cause significant damage to the environment and human health.

Hazardous waste from private households is accepted free of charge; hazardous waste from commercial, industrial, and service businesses is accepted only upon reimbursement of the associated disposal costs.

The following types of hazardous waste are accepted at the collection sites:

Waste from commercial, industrial, and service businesses is generally not accepted during mobile collection. You can drop off such waste for a fee at the stationary collection site operated by PreZero Service Mitte-West GmbH & Co. KG, located at Liebigstraße 3, 36041 Fulda, West Industrial Park.

Drop-off times: every first Saturday (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) and every Thursday of the month (2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

Note: For commercial hazardous waste, take advantage of the return options offered by your suppliers. This can help you save significantly on disposal costs.

If you have any questions about the disposal of hazardous waste, please contact the Waste Management Department of the Fulda District.

Large household appliances include, in particular, washing machines, dishwashers, spin dryers, clothes dryers, electric ranges, refrigerators, and freezers, as well as televisions and monitors from private households. Because they are often difficult to transport due to their size and weight, and there is also a risk of breakage, these appliances are picked up from each residential property via a dedicated collection service.

Notify your city or municipal administration that you wish to dispose of old appliances. The administration will inform you of the pickup date, on which you should place your appliance by the curb in time for pickup. When a large appliance is picked up, you can also place small electrical appliances out at the same time.

Please do not put your old large appliances out for bulk trash pickup. They will not be collected there.

If you cannot wait until the next pickup or need to dispose of large quantities of old appliances (both large and small), you can also drop them off at the collection point at Grümel gGmbH, located at Steubenallee 6 in Fulda. Hours: Mon. through Thu. 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Fri. 7:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Tel.: 0661 9029334. Businesses and electronics retailers that have collected old appliances from their customers can also drop off these items here free of charge. Please notify us in advance if you plan to drop off large quantities so that we can ensure sufficient capacity is available.

Note: No separate fee is charged for the collection of large household appliances from private households. The costs are covered by the revenue from household waste collection fees.

Retailers with a store area of more than 400 square meters are required to accept returns of small and large electrical appliances. This regulation applies regardless of whether a new appliance is purchased.

Small electrical appliances can be dropped off free of charge in small quantities at all recycling centers. Small electrical appliances include, in particular:

• Consumer electronics devices (CD/DVD players, radios, hi-fi systems, cameras, etc.)
• Information technology devices (telephones, cell phones, laptops, printers, PCs without monitors, etc.)
• household appliances 
• power tools 
• electric toys

Large electrical appliances and display devices (televisions and monitors) are not accepted at recycling centers. There is a separate disposal system for these items.

Note: No separate fee is charged for the collection of small household appliances. The costs are covered by the revenue from household waste collection fees.

In many cities and towns, recycling centers have been set up as local waste disposal facilities. You can drop off the following types of waste there:

• Recycled paper
• Glass Containers
• Scrap Metal
• Scrap wood (from construction, remodeling, and renovation projects)
• mineral construction debris (no lightweight building materials such as pumice, hollow blocks, or aerated concrete blocks; no gypsum or gypsum wallboard; no Heraklit/"Sauerkrautplatten"; no other foreign materials such as plastics, metals, or wood)
• non-recyclable construction waste
• Small electrical/electronic appliances
• Fluorescent lamps
• Garden Waste

Due to capacity limitations, we can only accept small quantities (up to 1 cubic meter) at a time. To dispose of larger quantities, you must contact a waste management company.

Please sort different types of waste carefully before bringing them to the recycling center. This will help avoid a labor-intensive and time-consuming sorting process when you drop off your items at the recycling center.

Please do not bring hazardous waste. For safety reasons, hazardous waste cannot be accepted at the recycling centers. Please do not leave waste in front of the recycling centers outside of business hours.

In particular, the following items may not be accepted at recycling centers: asbestos-cement sheets, contaminated excavated soil (e.g., following an oil spill), or contaminated construction debris (e.g., from chimney demolition), mineral fiber insulation, railroad ties, telephone poles, debris from fire damage, tar residues, solvent-based paints, and other hazardous waste (special waste), plastic oil tanks, and large electrical appliances. For many of these materials, separate disposal options are available, or separate disposal is mandatory. Please also refer to our disposal guidelines in the alphabetically organized waste directory.
