Pre-School Health Examination

All children born on or before July 1—and who have therefore turned 6 by June 30—are required to attend school and are invited to the public health department for a pre-school health examination. This examination is required by law in Hesse.

The invitation to the pre-school health examination is sent by the public health departments.

The purpose of the pre-school health examination is to identify developmental disorders, chronic illnesses, or disabilities that may affect a child’s ability to succeed in school, in order to detect risks to schoolchildren’s health and development at an early stage and to initiate preventive support measures. The goal is to provide every child with the best possible conditions for a successful school experience.

Procedure for the Pre-School Medical Examination:

• Medical History and Review of Screening and Vaccination Status
• Eye exam, depth perception test, and color vision test
• Hearing Test
• Medical Examination and Standardized Social-Pediatric Developmental Screening
• Professional guidance for parents and the school

The exam takes about an hour.

If necessary, further evaluation by a specialist will be arranged.
