Contract-Based Conservation: HALM
The Hessian Program for Agri-Environmental and Landscape Conservation Measures (HALM) supports active farmers in managing their land in a way that is particularly environmentally and nature-friendly. The subsidized measures promote biodiversity, clean water, healthy (fertile) soils, and a stable climate. At the same time, they help preserve our diverse cultural landscape.
What types of measures are eligible for funding?
HALM offers a variety of programs that enable farms to contribute to nature conservation and environmental protection. These include, among others:
- organic farming
- particularly sustainable farming practices in arable farming (e.g., crop rotation, perennial flowering areas)
- Management and extensification of grasslands (e.g., limiting or eliminating the use of fertilizers and pesticides, later mowing dates)
- Measures related to perennial crops (e.g., the use of pheromones in viticulture, preservation of orchard stands)
- Species and Habitat Conservation (e.g., wildlife-friendly mowing, safe sheep and goat grazing)
- Preservation of endangered livestock breeds (e.g., Red Highland Cattle, Rhön Sheep)

Who can submit an application?
The following are eligible to apply:
- Farm owners
- Wine-growing operations
- Associations of several farm owners who primarily cultivate agricultural or vineyard land
The prerequisite is that the business meets the criteria for an “active business owner.” Further details are available on the WIBank website.
How can you participate in these initiatives?
Applications can be submitted each year through the Hessen Agricultural Portal by October 1. Land is selected based on a priority list, and the commitments then begin the following year.
