Palliative Care and Hospice Care

At PalliativNetz Osthessen, doctors and licensed nurses with advanced training in palliative care work hand in hand for the benefit of the seriously ill and the dying. The service area covers the city and district of Fulda.

Referrals are made by primary care physicians, hospitals, home care services, family members, and other institutions. Through close collaboration, the team is able to provide timely and comprehensive care from a single source. If the criteria for specialized outpatient palliative care are met, the palliative care team will schedule an initial visit promptly. A 24-hour on-call service staffed by a physician and palliative care specialists is available for patients and their families.

The German Palliative Care Foundation is a nationwide foundation based in Fulda. This provides people in Eastern Hesse with excellent opportunities to seek local advice on a wide range of issues related to hospice care and palliative care. The German Palliative Care Foundation’s office also offers advice and practical assistance on matters such as (advance) power of attorney, guardianship orders, and living wills.

The outpatient hospice service sees itself as a complement to outpatient nursing care provided by nursing services, the pastoral care provided by a pastor, and the medical care provided by a family doctor and/or a palliative care physician. The hospice service offers its support free of charge. The staff consists of volunteers who are trained by professionals for their assignments. The responsibilities of the outpatient hospice service include:

The inpatient hospice admits terminally ill patients who are facing one of the most difficult crises of their lives and who accept their impending death as a natural part of life.

If end-of-life care at home can no longer be provided because patients are experiencing severe pain, shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety, and distress, they have the option of being admitted to the facility.

Furthermore, if the family members providing care at home can no longer cope with this difficult crisis, or if individuals have no one left to turn to, then these individuals—who are affectionately called “hospice guests” at St. Elisabeth Hospice—can feel that they are in good hands.

The inpatient hospice is a small, intimate care facility of a special kind, with eight private rooms in a friendly and home-like atmosphere. The hospice is located within the Interdisciplinary Health Center Fulda at Herz-Jesu Hospital as an independent facility.

The team consists of licensed nursing staff and “psychosocial support providers” (pastoral care, music therapy, talk therapy), as well as the “heart” of the hospice: the volunteers who fulfill the very personal wishes of the hospice guests living here.
