Working Group on Youth Dental Care (AKJ)
“Healthy teeth—happy smiles for all children.” That is the motto of the Fulda Youth Dental Care Working Group. Since 1991, we have been working together with approximately 60 private-practice dentists, nutritionists, the dental teams at the Fulda Public Health Department, and the statutory health insurance providers to care for children’s teeth. This is because, in Hesse, all children from birth through age 12 have a legal right to dental health support. This is enshrined in Section 21 of the Fifth Social Code.
Services for Expectant Parents
At maternity hospitals, new parents receive a packet of informational materials when their child is born to help ensure a healthy start to life in terms of dental health.
Program for Preschools
Dentists from private practices regularly visit children at daycare centers as “sponsoring dentists,” teaching them about dental health in a playful way, and providing support and advice to parents and educators.
We rely on
- Practical exercises for daily toothbrushing using the KAI Plus method (chewing surfaces – outer surfaces – inner surfaces – plus parents brushing their children’s teeth clean)
- the “Sugar-Free Morning” and tooth-healthy eating, as well as
- Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste.
Through a casual interaction with a dentist or a visit to a dental office, children learn to feel at ease during dental visits.
Program for Schools
The Public Health Department’s dental team also visits schools regularly and, in addition to the routine screenings required by law, offers fluoride treatments for the first permanent molars. Through theoretical and practical lessons on dental health and nutrition, children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own dental care. During each visit, they practice brushing their teeth.
Programs Outside of Schools and Child Care Facilities
We regularly offer continuing education courses for dentists and their teams, as well as for education professionals. We participate in various events—such as the “Schlaufuchsfest” and World Children’s Day—with information booths and activities. At these events, you can always get information and advice on all aspects of dental health.
